If you’re new to how this all works, you’re not alone. Whether you’re here for a custom piece or just exploring, this page will walk you through the process, answer common questions, and help you figure out our next steps!

General

What do you make?

I create custom, handcrafted wood art pieces ranging from detailed portrait-style artwork to logos and statement pieces. Every build is designed with intention and made to be one-of-a-kind. I primarily specialize in intarsia, which puzzles together various species of natural hardwoods, without paints and stains, to create a portrait or design. In many ways, it’s like painting with wood instead of paint. The range of color and character found in natural wood is what makes each piece so unique.

Do you only do custom work?

My business has always been centered around custom commissions which I absolutely love to do! I have also recently started releasing collections of self-led pieces. Any available pieces for sale are listed here on my website.

Where are you located? Do you ship?

I'm based outside Chicago and ship internationally. If you're local, pickup or dropoff is available—I'd love to meet you in person!

Do you use lasers and CNCs?

All of my custom pieces are handmade, cutting the pieces on my scroll saw and shaping them with a rotary tool and finishing by hand. I do have a CNC I use for flattening boards and a laser I use for engraving my logo, but otherwise my primary focus is creating my art by hand.

Custom Orders

How does the custom process work?

It starts with your idea! From there, I'll work with you to refine the concept, design, and then bring it to life.

How do I get started?

To discuss your idea or get a rough estimate, please submit an inquiry through my contact form with as much detail as possible.

Once you are ready to start the design process, you can place a custom design deposit to secure a spot in the queue and get the design process going!

Do I need to know exactly what I want?

Not at all! Some clients come with a clear vision, others just have a general idea. I can help guide the direction either way.

How much does a custom piece cost?

Each piece is priced individually based on size, complexity, and level of detail. I’m always happy to work with you to find something that fits what you’re looking to invest. That might mean adjusting size, level of detail, or design direction while still creating a piece that feels intentional and true to your vision.

Because everything is custom and handcrafted, pricing can vary quite a bit, but most pieces start at $1k and go up from there. Pet portraits typically start around $3k. If you’d like a rough estimate, feel free to send photos and I’m happy to provide a ballpark.

I understand custom work isn’t always something people are ready to invest in right away, which is why I offer flexible payment options through Affirm at checkout. And if now isn’t the right time, I’ll still be here when it is!

What is your turnaround time?

Most pieces take around 8 weeks from the start of production, but timing can vary depending on my current queue. The overall timeline also depends on how quickly we move through the design phase, communication, and final payment, which is required before production begins.

I put a lot of care into each piece, and rushing the process takes away from that, so I prioritize doing it right over doing it fast. I can provide a more accurate estimate once your order details are finalized.

If you are ordering for a specific occassion or have a hard deadline, please let me know as soon as possible in our communications. I’ll always do my best to accommodate, but I don’t take on rush work if it compromises the quality of the piece. Expedited timelines may incur an additional fee.

Will my piece look exactly like the reference photo?

Each piece is handcrafted and interpreted through wood, which means it won't be an exact replica and that is part of what makes it special! I focus on capturing the essence, depth, and character of the subject. With that being said, I pride myself on being very detail-oriented and matching wood as closely as nature allows!

Pet Portraits

What is the process for ordering a custom pet portrait?

The first step is placing a custom order deposit to secure your spot and begin the design process.

Then, please email photos of your pet(s) to jess@thelivingtimberco.com if you haven't already! I recommend choosing photos that clearly show their face and personality, with accurate lighting and coloring. Straight-on angles at their eye level work best when possible. For multiple pets, send your favorite pictures of each and I will piece them together.

After I receive the photos, I work on generating mockups using the best pics and combining pets together if applicable. Once you approve the picture selection/arrangement, I hand draw the template.

Next, once you give the final sign-off of the template and estimate, I will send an invoice for the piece. Then once I reach your piece in the queue I build it!

What size are the portraits?

Each portrait varies based on number of pets and the pose, but my default size for one pet is typically a 12-14" square and two pets cropped to their torsos runs around 12"x20". I can always size up, but can't go much smaller than this as it makes it much harder to make by hand (so many tiny pieces already!) If you have a specific space you want to hang your piece, I can size it to fit there too.

Shipping & Care

How is my piece shipped?

All pieces are very carefully packaged to ensure they arrive safely. Larger or more delicate pieces may require specialized shipping such as freight.

How much does shipping cost?

Domestic shipping is included in your final estimate.

For international orders, please provide your shipping address and I’ll confirm any additional shipping costs. My work typically does not incur duty fees, but import taxes (such as HST) may apply depending on your location.

How do I care for my piece?

I finish my pieces in a durable coating that does not require upkeep like other wood finishes. To ensure your piece maintains its color and last for generations, keep your piece indoors and away from excessive moisture, heat, or direct sunlight. Wood is a natural material and will respond to its environment over time.

Other

Do you accept collaborations or brand partnerships?

I take a very intentional approach to partnerships. Authenticity is a priority for me, so I only collaborate with brands that align with my values and that I can genuinely stand behind. Please contact me to discuss.

Do you accept returns or refunds?

Because each piece is custom-made, returns and refunds aren’t accepted.

That said, I take this seriously—I’m committed to creating something you truly love. I work closely with you throughout the design process to make sure everything feels right and is fully approved before production begins. I’ve never had a situation where a client wasn’t happy with their final piece.
